“It has been said that art is a tryst,
for in the joy of it maker and beholder meet”-Kojiro Tomita
Always a lifetime lover of art and art history, Myrtle Beach and the empty nest, afforded Weldon the time to discover and cultivate her interest in painting. Under the tutelage of Susan Duke, Weldon fell in love with watercolors and the beauty found outside her studio window overlooking her garden. Butterflies have significant meaning to Weldon and were a natural starting place for her art. Flowers and landscapes reflecting her love of travel soon followed. Commissioned pieces of homes and gardens are also a passionate part of her work.
Weldon Smith (nee Cabell) grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. She attended St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia, St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She lived for 35 years in Martinsville, Virginia after her marriage to Carter Smith. In 1998, Weldon and her husband retired to their home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In Myrtle Beach, Weldon became involved with the Art Museum and Brookgreen Gardens, both would greatly influence her desire to paint.
Now an award winning artist, her work can be found in private collections throughout the South, in California, China and Brazil, as well as several local galleries in South Carolina.
Painting watercolors gives me great pleasure and satisfaction, I become completely wrapped up in the painting and time just flies.
“What art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.”
